Stella and Arcavia – GRAND RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Two New Mirror Designs

Stella & Arcavia

Decorative Convex Mirror | Beveled Flat Mirror

Matthew Buck

Reflecting Design is pleased to introduce two new mirror frame designs now available in the reflectingdesign | odlum entrance collection.

We are offering these mirrors in two mirror versions, as ; a standard convex mirror and a beveled flat mirror.

Designed ostensibly for the convex mirror collection the beveled flat mirror option extends the design possibilities. A 1 inch (25 mm) bevel brings a beautifully natural framed edge to the mirror, augmenting the design and the finish.

Two Originals in the Pantheon of Frame Design.

Designer Matthew Buck feels he can with merit say, “Stella and Arcavia are original in the world of mirror frame design.”

“While Stella might in some ways be seen as an interpretation of a sun or star burst the ultimate form is a long departure from the sunburst we see so much of in the market place.  This is not a another 4 inch convex mirror sunburst in the sense we all know. Stella is bold and strong in line with a large convex lens effect. Study the piece closely and you will discover a design of subtle complexity. Another nice change with Stella is that it has a large mirror, so you this mirror is more than just decorative, particularly with the beveled flat mirror.”

Arcavia by comparison is singularly unique. I have seen nothing close to it anywhere. Designing both Stella and Arcavia I wanted a graphic or non-linear outline. I wanted very much as well to design something original which is a hard ask no matter what. It is unquestionably difficult finding a marriage between originality and something good. I hope people feel there is both here.”

Matthew Buck explains the design approach that launched the company.

“Convex mirrors being circular, my early frame designs were most easily approached as a continuous line profile. It was a matter in part of technical necessity. The clean interpretation of classic profiles has produced handsome and robust frame designs. While there is interest in classical convex mirror design as might be represented by the Federal and Girondelle designs, the break-through for Reflecting Design in this sense has been a collection that resonates as both traditional and contemporary – transitional as they say.”

Conceptually the task of producing a new design is straight forward but demanding. Anyone familiar with design understands there is a large step between a conceptual idea and a production piece. The process necessitates the creation of pieces leading to a master prototype. Producing prototypes is both expensive and time-consuming. A manageable approach to this problem involved tools that facilitated both complexity and vision.

“I do not want to talk about my exact technical approach, however, I have found a way to my vision that is less a practical execution and more of a conceptual approach. There is no time saved but it is arguably more economical. I can say that the development of these two designs was a big effort. Easily 50 renderings or drawings for each and three to scale pieces. The effort, coincidental to running my business, was too long in the making, a real frustration. I want more time.”

Modern and Classic

Like early designs in this iteration Reflecting Design seeks  a look that is both modern and contemporary. The marriage of the two ideas is achieve through the two elements of design – form and texture.

All Colour rendering is conditional to your monitor.

“The form of Stella and Arcavia are ultimately modern. As with any sophisticated design, to use the old cliche, there is more at work here than meets the eye. Conceptually the form has been approached like a cut diamond. Surfaces are complex and strategic. Light reflects off these pieces in a very robust way.”

Antique Brass | Antique Silver

The metallic finishing chosen creates another stylistic effect. On the one side, metallics reflect light, key to the best effect of the faceted surfaces and the line. On the other side these antiqued metallics offer the human touch.

“Purely modern necessitates modern materials. I chose an Antique Brass and Antique Silver to start as these finishes lend themselves well to both modern and contemporary interiors. These pieces might be seen as technocratic or mechanistic. Hand-painted finishes give them a different kind of sensibility – one of being created by hand rather than technology. I like it when a piece feels both modern and old.”

Black Rust

In addition to the two archaize finishes, Antique Brass and Antique Silver, the first offering includes a more neutral finish, Black Rust . This finish works well again to highlight the line and surfacing. In truth I find it hard to describe the Black Rust look. The Arcavia in Black Rust looks really great.”

Whats Next

Reflecting Design has some exciting plans for Stella and Arcavia. Look for some new finishes to be added soon. Equally an ultra-modern editions in translucent acrylic shall be available in a limited edition. and some new materials. An LED backlight will soon be available.

Our Mission

At Reflecting Design we love convex mirrors. This love inspired designer Matthew Buck to conceive a product line. After a year learning to design mirror frames a line of 3 frames was launched in 2005. Since then the collection has grown to include 12 designs in sizes ranging from 24 to 48 inches diameter. Matthew Buck is the originator of the revival of decorative convex mirrors as an interior design accessory. Reflecting Design promotes always convex mirrors for interior design however now flat mirrors are an option for all frame designs.
